Staying Safe and Respectful This Summer
With the warmer weather finally here, many of us will be spending more time outside enjoying the sunshine. Whether it’s BBQs, family gatherings, or just relaxing in the fresh air, summer is a great time to make the most of your outdoor space. But it’s also important to look after ourselves, our homes, and each other to ensure a safe, enjoyable season for everyone.
Here are some important reminders:
Be Sun Smart and Stay Hydrated
- Drink regularly throughout the day, especially during heatwaves
- Choose water or sugar-free drinks and limit fruit juices or smoothies
- Drink extra fluids after physical activity or if you’re unwell

- Dilute squash and limit caffeine
- If you don’t like plain water, try adding a slice of lemon or lime, or opt for no-added-sugar squash or sparkling water
Protect your skin – Use SPF sunscreen and avoid direct sun between 11am–3pm.
Keep your home cool – Close blinds or curtains during the day and ventilate in the evening.
BBQ and Garden Safety
- Only use BBQs in private gardens or designated areas – never indoors or on balconies.
- Keep BBQs away from buildings, fences, and anything flammable.
- Fully extinguish BBQs after use.
- If you live in a flat or shared building, check your tenancy agreement or contact us before using a BBQ.
3. Balcony and Window Safety
Letting fresh air in is a great way to stay cool, but please stay safe – especially if you have children or vulnerable adults at home.
- Don’t leave children unsupervised on balconies.
- Keep balcony doors locked when not in use.
- Avoid placing furniture near open windows or doors.
- Report faulty window catches or balcony locks to us so we can help.
- Avoid storing items or clutter on balconies – they can pose a fire and safety risk.
Be Mindful of Noise
Summer often means more time outdoors, but noise can travel further through open windows.
- Keep music and gatherings to a reasonable level, especially in the evenings.
- Be mindful of shouting, loud conversations, and slamming doors late at night.
- Encourage children to play respectfully in communal areas.
Look Out for Each Other
- Check in on elderly or vulnerable neighbours during heatwaves.
- Never leave children or pets in hot cars or poorly ventilated rooms.
- Keep shared spaces clean and free of rubbish to avoid attracting pests.
Let’s all do our part to make this summer safe, enjoyable, and respectful for everyone in our GCHA communities.
