Staying Safe This Christmas and Winter Season
A Warm & Safe Winter Starts at Home
As we head into the festive period, we want all our residents to enjoy a safe, warm, and happy Christmas. Here are a few simple reminders to help keep your home and community safe over the winter months.
Fire Safety at Home
• Never leave candles unattended. If you enjoy using candles, be sure they’re placed on a stable, heat-resistant surface and well away from decorations, curtains, and Christmas trees. Always extinguish them before leaving the room or going to bed.
• Keep flammable decorations away from heat sources. Heaters, open flames, and cooking areas should be kept clear.
• Use Christmas lights safely. Check lights for damaged cables or loose bulbs before putting them up. Only use lights that meet UK safety standards, avoid overloading plug sockets, and switch them off when you’re out or asleep.
Avoiding Slips and Trips
Winter weather can make outdoor areas slippery.
• Take extra care on icy or wet paths. Wear suitable footwear and allow more time for journeys.
• Use handrails where available and be mindful of uneven surfaces or fallen leaves that may cause slips.
• Report any hazardous areas around your building so we can make sure they’re dealt with promptly.
Looking Out for Each Other
The winter months can be challenging for some. If you have elderly or vulnerable neighbours, a quick check-in can make a big difference.
