Contents insurance: protecting your belongings

Your home is more than just the building; it’s everything inside it. Furniture, clothing, electrical items and personal belongings can be costly to replace if something goes wrong.

What is contents insurance?

Contents insurance helps protect your personal belongings against risks such as:

  • Fire
  • Theft or burglary
  • Flooding or water damage
  • Accidental damage (depending on your policy)

If your belongings are damaged, lost, or stolen, contents insurance can help cover the cost of repairing or replacing them.

Why it’s important

Replacing everyday items can be expensive, especially with the rising cost of living. Contents insurance can give you peace of mind that you won’t have to cover these costs on your own.

Even small claims, such as damage to carpets or electrical items, can quickly add up.

What GCHA is responsible for

GCHA insures the structure of your home, including the building itself.

However, we do not cover your personal belongings. This means:

  • Furniture, clothing and personal items are your responsibility
  • You would not be able to claim for these through GCHA unless we are legally liable

When claims may not be paid

If damage occurs and GCHA or our contractors are not responsible, we will not be able to offer compensation for your belongings.

This is why having your own contents insurance is so important.

Choosing a policy

When considering contents insurance, you may want to look for:

  • The total value of items covered
  • Whether accidental damage is included
  • Any excess you would need to pay
  • Cover for high-value items

There is a range of providers available, and some insurers offer policies designed specifically for tenants.
