Staying safe and well in hot weather
With the recent hot weather and summer approaching, we know that high temperatures can be difficult and uncomfortable, especially for older residents, young children, people with health conditions and those living in homes that get very warm.
At GCHA, we want to support residents to stay safe, comfortable and well during periods of hot weather. Here are some simple steps you can take to help keep yourself, your family and your home cooler.
Stay hydrated
Drinking enough fluids is one of the most important things you can do during hot weather.
Try to:
- Drink water regularly throughout the day, even if you do not feel thirsty
- Keep a bottle or glass of water nearby
- Eat water-rich foods such as fruit, salads and ice lollies
- Avoid too much alcohol, caffeine or very sugary drinks
- Encourage children and older relatives to drink often
- Take water with you when leaving the house
Keep your home cooler
Small changes can help reduce heat indoors:
- Keep curtains or blinds closed during the day, especially on the sunny side of your home
- Keep windows closed when it is hotter outside than inside
- Open windows in the evening or at night when it is cooler, only if it is safe to do so
- Use a fan if you have one, but avoid placing it directly in front of babies, young children or anyone unwell
- Turn off lights and electrical items when not in use
- Try to avoid using the oven during the hottest part of the day
Look after yourself and others
During very hot weather, try to stay out of the sun between 11am and 3pm, wear loose, light clothing and use sun cream when outdoors. Check in on neighbours, family members or friends who may be more affected by the heat.
If you feel dizzy, weak, very thirsty, sick or confused, move somewhere cool, drink water and seek medical advice if symptoms do not improve.

Summer safety reminders
As the weather gets warmer, please remember:
- Stay safe in the sun: use sun cream, wear a hat and seek shade when needed
- Be fire safe: never use BBQs on balconies, indoors or close to buildings
- Keep children safe: always supervise children on balconies and near open windows
- Keep communal areas clear and report any safety concerns to GCHA
